Stephen Sheffield has Pop Sonality!

💥¿Quién eres? Soy nativo del área de Boston, soy alumno de la Universidad de Cornell en Ithaca NY, donde obtuve un BFA en pintura y técnicas mixtas. Pasé a recibir su MFA en fotografía y medios mixtos de la Facultad de Artes de California en Oakland CA, estudié directamente con Larry Sultan y fui asistente de él, además de estudiar con Jean Finley, Jim Goldberg y otros. Durante el tiempo que estuve allí también tuve la maravillosa oportunidad de asistir a Carrie Mae Weems en su estudio en Oakland.

¿Qué haces? Soy fotógrafo de bellas artes y artista de collage, creando impresiones editadas para galerías y coleccionistas privados. También me encargan regularmente hoteles, restaurantes, corporaciones e individuos de todo el país para obras de arte permanentes a pequeña y gran escala y fui profesor adjunto en el Instituto de Arte y Diseño en New England College, Programa MFA en New Hampshire, y antes de eso , Fui profesor en la Escuela de Fotografía de Nueva Inglaterra en Boston. Actualmente, también formo parte de la junta directiva del South Shore Art Center en Cohasset, Massachusetts, y mi fotografía de bellas artes está representada en Massachusetts por la Galería Panopticon en Boston, y en Los Ángeles por la Galería Collector Works. Tengo obras de arte en colecciones de arte nacionales e internacionales y actualmente estoy buscando una galería y representación de arte corporativo fuera de Boston.

Influencias e inspiración:

Mi fotografía está influenciada por los maestros modernos de la fotografía y el surrealismo, específicamente, Carrie Mae Weems, Ralph Eugene Meatyard, Duane Michals y Rene Magritte. Creo imágenes que a menudo son formales, heroicas y oníricas al mismo tiempo. Cada imagen podría considerarse una actuación y el "hombre común" de traje oscuro es la musa con Sheffield habitando el traje o un diminuto suplente. Usando una película en blanco y negro de gran formato y una cámara de prensa antigua, el estado de ánimo de sus fotos se ve realzado por las imperfecciones expresivas y decididas de la edad y el medio. Me considero un narrador que describe lo ordinario y lo inusual a través del filtro de mi ocasionalmente oscuro sentido del humor. El tema es el hombre moderno, los hombres y la masculinidad con un enfoque en los miedos, los fracasos, el ego, la ironía y los actos heroicos fabricados. A menudo apoyo el ambiente cinematográfico mediante el uso de técnicas de revelado, procesos fotográficos no tradicionales y película Polaroid positiva/negativa obsoleta.

Mi trabajo de collage se basa principalmente en algunos años específicos de la revista LIFE y EBONY y me limito a un formato base de 14x11". Los años justo antes de mi propio nacimiento, desde finales de la década de 1940 hasta 1965, representan para mí lo que se ha percibido como una época ideal. En este trabajo exploro la fachada “ideal” presentada en los anuncios vs el malestar que experimento en los artículos. Intento subvertir ese ideal y utilizar el malestar del pasado, mientras que al mismo tiempo trazo un paralelo con el alivio y el continuo malestar en la primavera de 2021. Dentro de este proceso, no puedo evitar infundir mi propio humor con la ansiedad de 2020 y la confusión de la masculinidad moderna con la yuxtaposición de imágenes y el proceso inexacto de cortar con un bisturí y fijar el papel con pegamento.

💥Who are you? I am a native of the Boston area, is an alumnus of Cornell University in Ithaca NY, where I obtained a BFA in painting and mixed media. I went on to receive his MFA in photography and mixed media from the California College of the Arts in Oakland CA, studying directly under and was assistant to Larry Sultan as well as studying under Jean Finley, Jim Goldberg, and others. During his time there I also had the wonderful opportunity to assist Carrie Mae Weems at her studio in Oakland.

What do you do? I am a fine art photographer, and collage artist, creating editioned prints for galleries and private collectors.  I am also regularly commissioned by hotels, restaurants, corporations, and individuals around the country for small and large-scale permanent artwork and was adjunct faculty at the Institute of Art and Design at New England College, MFA Program in New Hampshire, and before that, I was faculty at the New England School Of Photography in Boston.  I am also currently on the Board of Directors of the South Shore Art Center in Cohasset Massachusetts and my fine art photography is represented in Massachusetts by the Panopticon Gallery in Boston, and in LA by Collector Works Gallery.  I have artwork in national and international art collections and am currently seeking gallery and corporate art representation outside of Boston. 

Influences and inspiration: 

My photography is influenced by the modern masters of photography and surrealism, specifically, Carrie Mae Weems, Ralph Eugene Meatyard, Duane Michals and Rene Magritte,  I create images that are often formal and heroic and dreamlike at the same time. Each image could be considered a performance and the dark-suited “everyman” is the muse with Sheffield inhabiting the suit or a diminutive stand-in. Using large-format black and white film and an antique press camera, the mood of his photos is enhanced by the purposeful and expressive imperfections of age and medium. I consider myself a storyteller depicting the ordinary and unusual through the filter of my occasionally dark sense of humor. The subject is modern man, men, and masculinity with a focus on fears, failures, ego, irony, and manufactured heroics. I often support the cinematic mood by use of development techniques, non-traditional photographic processes, and outdated Polaroid positive/negative film.

My collage work is drawn mostly from a few purposefully-specific years of LIFE and EBONY Magazine and limit myself to a 14x11” base format. The years just before my own birth, the late 1940s up to 1965, represent to me what has been perceived to be an ideal time. In this work I explore the “ideal” façade presented in the advertisements vs the unease I experience in the articles. I attempt to subvert that ideal and use the past unease, while at the same time drawing a parallel to the relief and continued unease in the spring of 2021. Within this process, I cannot help but instill my own humor with the anxiety of 2020 and the confusion of modern manhood with image juxtaposition and the inexact process of cutting with a scalpel and fixing the paper with glue.
